With a significant increase in the number of skyscrapers, high rise buildings with curtain glass walls in modern cities, these walls require constant cleaning and maintenance. We always look for some technology which reduces human efforts in a hazardous job such as fire rescue, inspection, cleaning etc. Cleaning of glass wall manually is dangerous, laborious and costly. Our project endeavours to solve this problem. The objective of the project was to develop a robot which uses suction cups for adhesion and two cross sliders for movement both in X-Y DIRECTION. The robot also includes motion in Z-Axis to counter the variation in terrain (like window panes, connectors, etc). Thus, enabling an efficient, risk-free and cost-effective glass cleaning. The primary idea of the project was to eliminate the risk involved and potentially avoid loss of life in a day to day affair, as well as use the same device for cleaning various other surfaces such as solar panels and inspection of smooth surfaces.
The project involved the development of the robot initially using a metal frame, while the metal frame provided sturdiness, the robot was heavy. In order to reduce the weight, the robot was re-designed to be Polylactic Acid (PLA) compl
iant. This resulted in a significant reduction in the weight, which in turn made the various motions smoother.

Future scope of improvement:

•Strength of the robot can be increased by using composite materials or  FRP.

•Robot can be made smarter by adding mapping algorithms.

•More number of cleaning mechanisms can be included.
